In his new show, titled EXCERPTS FROM THE TAJ MAHAL (The Truth Always Happens),
artist Peter Tunney acts as critic and entertainer mining 1990s American culture. Atlantic City’s now defunct
Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino, once a monument of excess (costing just under one billion dollars to build and
dubbed ‘The 8th Wonder of the World’) is now being dismantled piece by piece and loaded into dumpsters.
It has become a symbol of the fragile and ever changing ‘American Dream’. The Taj Mahal, which shut its
doors in late 2016, serves as both inspiration and physical medium for Tunney’s December 2017 exhibit.
Tunney transforms his Wynwood Walls gallery utilizing casino carpeting,
chandeliers and other remnants from the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. “I love turning trash into treasure,” says the artist
with some irony, “this is about US, what WE loved and what WE craved.”
